This started as a blog about training together as a family, in part to inspire other women & families to get involved. As female participation in jiu jitsu has increased, as we have grown as athletes and as we learned that families training together aren’t such an anomaly, the blog has evolved. Jen gets personal with posts on ambition, challenges & achievements in BJJ, CrossFit & with nutrition, while Tom's posts are more educational, informative and analytical in regards to training. On occasion you may hear from the kids.

Inspiration While you Drive

I work as a broadcast engineer for a group of radio stations in Miami and I have a long bumper to bumper commute every morning. Even though I have worked in the radio industry for years, I will be the first to admit that the South Florida radio market leaves a lot to be desired. I have ditched listening to local radio in favor of listening to my ipod. My favorite commute pastime is listening to podcasts that I have downloaded from itunes. A podcast is typically an amateur talk radio show produced specifically for download into a mp3 player or streamed via the Internet. Some of these shows are more interesting than professionally produced radio. I have learned so much from listening to them. College lectures on philosophy and religion, interviews with media professionals on video production and expert entrepreneurs discussing marketing for small businesses. ALL FOR FREE!

Here is the best part, there are some really good Brazilian Jiu Jitsu podcasts that have interviews with the top competitors, trainers and founders of BJJ. My favorite BJJ podcast is the Fight Works podcast http://thefightworkspodcast.com. Listen to advice from champions like Andre Galvao, Jean Jacques Machado, Saulo Ribeiro, Hillary Williams, Leticia Ribeiro and Marcelo Garcia. Learn the history of the art from legends like Renzo Gracie, Rorion Gracie, Carlos Gracie Jr, Ricardo Liborio, Kid Peligro and Carlos Machado. There are also some other good BJJ podcast starting to surface. Grapple arts radio by Stephan Kesting http://kesting.libsyn.com has some great interviews including GSP's conditioning coach and a podcast dedicated to BJJ competition. Nova Uniao black belt Robson Moura has a new podcast RMNU Radio http://robsonmoura.com/wordpress. There are a slew of MMA podcasts as well that also interview BJJ guys that cross train MMA, a quick search of the itunes store will bring up dozens of them to download. http://www.thelightsoutshow.com and http://mmajunkie.com are two that you might want to check out.

You can

By Jen

We’re training hard for the Miami open – 6 weeks to go. My biggest hurdle is a mental one - finding my belief in my abilities. Marcelo recognizes this even when I don’t and, consequently, I received more coaching last week. I’m feeling better so far, but I’m beginning to think that this will be my personal battle every time I’m on the mat. Now that I know that, I can work on overcoming it.

I once read that coaches are there to encourage, motivate and inspire. We’re lucky to have found a coach who does just that. Marcelo constructively shows us our weaknesses and motivates us to overcome them. He’s constantly challenging us to get better and to push our limits. It's our job as students to listen and learn. It's only personal in that he is trying to bring us to our personal best.

I’m looking forward to competing on October 23rd and to sharing the day with my Nova Uniao South Florida teammates. Some of us will be returning from last year and some will be competing for the first time. Win or lose, we will be out there doing our best and making each other proud.
