This started as a blog about training together as a family, in part to inspire other women & families to get involved. As female participation in jiu jitsu has increased, as we have grown as athletes and as we learned that families training together aren’t such an anomaly, the blog has evolved. Jen gets personal with posts on ambition, challenges & achievements in BJJ, CrossFit & with nutrition, while Tom's posts are more educational, informative and analytical in regards to training. On occasion you may hear from the kids.

Two Years of Training!

by Jen

This week marks our two year anniversary of training. The first day I almost didn’t get out of the car. Look at us now.

Who knew that in two years time:
1. Logan’s room decor would include a belt, swords, medals and posters of Rocky & Jose Aldo?
2. One of Hunter’s aspirations would be to be an MMA fighter?
3. I’d be okay with Tom making a space for the mats in our bedroom?
4. I would be the one pushing Tom to get to class on some nights when we’re tired & don’t feel like training?
5. We would meet such awesome people who have become important parts of our lives?
6. Logan, our oldest child, would find lots of “big brothers” in our team to help look after her?
7. I would now watch the Ultimate Fighter & UFC and actually know who the fighters are?
8. We would develop such a strong friendship with our instructor, Marcelo, whom we respect and love dearly?
9. That our kids would have the privilege of training under someone who serves as a great role model to them?
10. That I’d be ready for more training & new challenges in the coming year?

  2. Congratulations Jen! You should be very proud. We have a couple of BJJ families at my school, and their presence really helps to create a good energy on the mat.

  3. @bjj judo -So glad I can make you laugh! I would say that after 15 years of marriage you learn to pick your battles, but I'm actually happy to have them so accessible. Crazy, I know.

    Thanks @A.d. and Dagney!

  4. Great post! #3 is great. What actually happens on those mats stays in the bedroom...

  5. Wow!

Awesome story. My wife tolerates my BJJ habit. Even though she is not gung-ho I still appreciate her being so cool about how much I am involved.
